I will not complain about Jakarta's busway strategy. It's a patchwork solution, of course, but at least it is a solution. Will it works great in the future, we just have to see.
What I am about to write is the irony about it. At first glance, busway seems like a revolutionary way to solve the traffic's problem in Jakarta. But actually, nothing new about it. Let see what are the things busway "introduced":
- Special Bus Lane
Nothing new about it. Before the busway, the most left lane is always be the public transportation lane. So, yes, the system is already exists. - The bus can not pass another bus
Nothing new. The bus always had the sign "Bus is not allowed to pass another bus". Well, it's just a sign, nobody follow that rule. - The bus can only stop and be stopped at the specific bus stop
Nothing new also. Of course the bus HAS to stop at the bus stop. We were told this all the time. Again, nobody seems to follow that rule.
So, actually nothing new, eh? The irony is those rules had to be forced by using the busway system because nobody seems to follow those obvious rules of conduct.
This is what bothers me a lot. Are Indonesian had to be forced to obey the rules? Are we that primitives that we need the carrots and sticks method just to obey the rules? I guess we are and that fact make me sad.

I always have a knack to create something. I strongly believe my parents had great influence on this knack. My first toys, that I could remember, was a set of wooden building block. Then it was Lego time! So since the beginning of my brain activity I was introduced with "building attitude".
That's why I chose Architecture for my undergraduate school, well - it's not 100% true tho, my first choice was Computer Science but hey, it's also "building something", right? Create softwares? So it was not so offshot then.
So it's really bother me to read or hear about people who think "create" is a waste of time. Huh? Well, you've seen those people everyday, mate. The very good example is how Indonesian businessmen are doing their business. If you notice there are not too many Indonesian company invested in "Research and Development" - most of them are just your typical 'seller'. Buy things from somewhere, mark them up with profits and sell them quick - sometimes without support.
Well, there you have it. The way Indonesian are doing business - most of the time. No invention, no idea, just buy, sell and profit. So there is no wonder we have so little innovative start-up.
In my business field, Internet service, software development and stuffs, it was common that so-called 'web developer' and 'software development' are nothing but some bunchs of 'template modifier or beautifier' than innovative, technology aware, future thinking company. Currently I run my own Information Architecture and User Experience Design consultancy and to my amazement there are lots of so-called web development company here in Indonesia which never heard about my kind of consultancy. Imagine that. Web or software development without IA or UX... Can you imagine their product. I rather not because it will make me cringe with pain.
So there you have it, why many Indonesian web or software developer company are not so successful, because they are just follower... or worse, they are just seller and at the end of the day, they are running out of option because they are just can not compete with competitors because what they are offered are not different than their competitors.
Such a shame...
Just subscribed to a broadband wireless internet provider. So right now I have a 24 hours online connection like I used to have when I was in Germany (and Canada). Nice. Er... not really... Why?
Because I have to pay the same amount of money as in Germany and Canada but less - much less - connection speed. $20 for 512 kbps - shared with 10 others - and this is one of the cheapest deal in this country. $20. 512 kbps. Shared. 10 people. Imagine that.
I have a vague idea about why the price of Internet connection is freaking high in this miserable country.The government and it's partner in crime - that corrupted bloated monopolistic telecomunication company aka. PT. Telkom Indonesia - are the guilty party, especially the Ministry of Information and Communication who are too afraid to speak loud to PT. Telkom to lower the connection price - - yes, imagine a government entity feel afraid to a government owned private company, pathetic eh?. But that's what happened here. Instead of doing some action against PT. Telkom, the Minister of Information and Communication was giving promise, promise and promise that he will do something about it... It's been a while, Sir... Where is the good news?
Anyway, I am just curious. Most of the country I'd been visited were selling "Mega bits per second". So which country - other than mine - are still selling connection service speed in "kilo bits per second"? Please, let me know. Thanks!
Well, at least I have a 24 hours affordable connection now. It's not fast but it's decent and it's only $20.
After almost a year being back in Jakarrta, I still couldn't overcome the traffic. It's so bad, well, really bad it almost make me, well again - not almost but already did it couple of times, scream in frustration.
For a start, I am not fond of driving. I enjoy public transportation because there are many things I can do inside public transportation - like reading a book, playing PSP or just listening to iPod. Of course I enjoy driving sometime as long as the traffic is bearable - little traffic jam is okay, major traffic jam is a big no no.
The problem with Jakarta is the public transportation sucks. Period. Of course we have Transjakarta - the magical busway which the local government thought it will solve our traffic problem - well, in some way it did but it's like a patch solution to a really chronic problem. Imagine fixing a broken bone with a Band Aid - that is what our local government did. The Monorail is on the way - way too late - but I have good hope for that - hopefully.
Motorcycle. Jakarta's motorcyclist must die. Well, most of them. I hate them. They are the little devil minions ready to swallow you (and your car) and suck it into the deep fiery hell of confusion, frustration and mental disorder. They ignored all traffic rules. Well, most driver (cars and motorcyle) in Indonesia are ignoring the rules... correction: they probably just don't know the rules to begin with. But once they sit on those tiny motorcycle, they are thinking that they could do anything they want. Including using the pedestarian, stop at the crossing lane in the traffic light, violate traffic light when they saw no incoming traffic, move against the lane - which is really really dangerous and the my most favorite act: driving at night, without light. Well, I know most Jakarta's people have some kind of deathwish but please, don't involve other people on that.
It's a jungle in the street of Jakarta. It will bring the beast out of everyone. And more beasts is not what this country needs.
